The gymnastics pro Simone Biles, who represented the US in the Olympics, set the world's alarm bells ringing in the artistic gymnastics team final at the Olympic Games that are carrying out in Tokyo, Japan. After a missed vault, the top U.S. star walked off to the side with coaches and was sidelined from the competition.
The 24-year-old athlete still has five events on her Olympic calendar beyond this team competition. "Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final team competition due to a medical issue. She will be evaluated daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions," USA Gymnastics reported on its networks. The athlete broke her silence after the event and gave details of what happened.
Simone performed her routine, but did not perform the jump she had reported. After an irregular fall, the official Tokyo account reported that she was "being attended to by a coach" and that she had left the venue. The star did not perform the warm-up for the uneven bars and left her place to Jordan Chiles. When she stormed back into the Ariake Gymnastics Center, Simone was in her jacket and merely celebrated her team's performance.
USA Today, one of the first to confirm the situation, detailed the scene: "Biles, visibly upset, spoke with one of her personal trainers, Cecile Landi, and the team's doctor, Marcia Faustin".
After the competition, Simone spoke to reporters and stated that she was "okay, but dealing with some things internally which will get fixed up in the next couple of days."
"OLYMPIC SILVER MEDALISTS. I’m SO proud of these girls right here. You girls are incredibly brave & talented! I’ll forever be inspired by your determination to not give up and to fight through adversity! They stepped up when I couldn’t. thanks for being there for me and having my back! forever love y’all," she wrote in the caption of a photo she shared next to her teammates, Grace McCallum, Jordan Chiles, and Sunisa Lee.
