The Irish MMA fighter was slated to present an award.
This year's VMAs came with some drama, with Conor McGregor allegedly taking a swing at Machine Gun Kelly while walking the red carpet at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards in New York on Sunday.
According to photos and videos captured of the incident, the 33-year-old MMA fighter rushed at the 31-year-old rapper and had to be restrained by security guards. The altercation reportedly originated after McGregor's request to take a photo with Kelly was denied by his team, a source told People.
"Conor went in on it a little bit", added the insider, sharing that McGregor —who was set to present an award— began swinging his cane in the Midnight In The Switchgrass star's direction.
However, a rep for the Irish pro denied he asked for a photo. "Conor and Dee [Devlin, his girlfriend] are in their seats enjoying the show. Conor appreciates all his fans", they explained at the time, adding that Kelly "attended Conor's last fight."
A clip taken by a VMAs attendee, which was then posted to Twitter, seemingly showed the Irish pro charging toward Kelly and shouting at him as security guards held him back. Further photographic evidence showed the two men standing face to face during the incident.
During the awards ceremony, Kelly took the stage for a performance of his new single, "Papercuts" while his girlfriend, Megan Fox, appeared as a presenter. Meanwhile, McGregor apparently moved on from the altercation as he was spotted kissing Devlin and enjoying himself.
The 2021 MTV Video Music Awards were hosted by Doja Cat and aired live from New York City on Sunday, September 12.
