The singer welcomed her first child with boyfriend Elon Musk in May 2020.
Although Grimes gave birth to her first child last year, she doesn't really like being called "mom". While chronicling her 2021 Met Gala prep in a new video for Vogue, the 33-year-old singer —whose real name is Claire Boucher— revealed that her son X Æ A-Xii calls her by her first name.
"I think having a baby was a big rebirth for me, like artistically", she said. "Being a mother feels weird to say. For some reason, I don't identify with that word."
"Which is also really weird because X, he says 'Claire,' but he doesn't say 'mama.' Which is so... I'm like, 'How are you...?'", Grimes continued. "Like, maybe he can sense my distaste for the word 'mother.'"
"I don't even know why I have a distaste for [the word] because I respect … I just, I don't, I can't identify with it, weirdly", she added.
Grimes and boyfriend Elon Musk welcomed their first child together in May 2020 and caused some controversy for their unusual baby name. The songstress explained her son's unconventional moniker shortly after giving birth, revealing on Twitter that "X" is "the unknown variable," while "Æ" is "the elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence)."
The hitmaker added that part of her baby's name was inspired by a reconaissance plane, more specifically, the CIA's Lockheed A-12. "A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed," Grimes wrote. "Great in battle, but non-violent."
Although Grimes and Musk initially named their son X Æ A-12, they were later forced to change it to X Æ A-Xii on his birth certificate because California laws don't allow numbers, Roman numerals, accents, umlauts or other symbols in a legal name.
