The former couple were married from 1990 to 2001 and share two children.
Nicole Kidman is looking back on her marriage to ex-husband Tom Cruise —which received heavy media coverage back in the day. In a new interview with Harper's Bazaar, the 54-year-old actress opened up about the media frenzy surrounding their relationship.
When asked about the intense scrutiny she and Cruise faced during their marriage, Kidman replied with a laugh, "I was young. I think I offered it up? Maybe I've gotten a bit more trepidatious, but I'm always trying to be as open as possible. I just prefer to live in the world that way."
"I'm wary at times, and I've been hurt, but at the same time I much prefer a warm approach rather than a prickly shutdown approach", she continued. "My husband, Keith [Urban], says that when he met me, he said, 'How's your heart?' And I apparently responded, 'Open.'"
Kidman and Cruise first met on the set of their 1989 film Days of Thunder and began dating shortly after. They tied the knot the following year and soon became one of Hollywood's most beloved couples —though the happiness didn't last, as they divorced in 2001.
Since their split, Kidman and Cruise have rarely spoken about their 11-year marriage and remained particularly tight-lipped about the personal lives of their children, 28-year-old daughter Isabella and 26-year-old son Conor.
While speaking to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in November 2018, the five-time Golden Globe winner said that she's "very private" about the relationship with her older children. "I have to protect all those relationships", she explained at the time. "I know 150% that I would give up my life for my children because it's what my purpose is."
