The actor plays Fab G, Cinderella's gender-neutral godparent.
Billy Porter couldn't be happier about his role as Fab G in the new version of Cinderella! In a new interview with People, the 51-year-old actor opened up about playing a modern reimagining of the fairy godmother trope, revealing that it's a dream come true.
"When I was 14, my dream was to be the male Whitney Houston", Porter said of the late singer's iconic performance as the fairy godmother in the 1997 adaptation, which also starred Brandy.
However, the Pose alum also wanted to put his own spin on the beloved character. "I have been in the business long enough that I don't make comparisons. I'm not trying to do something that somebody else did before. I was thinking, 'It's my turn. What can I bring?'", he told the outlet.
In addition to Porter, the film — now streaming on Prime Video — stars Camila Cabello as Cinderella, Minnie Driver as Queen Beatrice, Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Charming, Idina Menzel as the evil stepmother and Pierce Brosnan as King Rowan.
During the interview, Porter also spoke about the importance of breaking gender norms and showing young audiences that they too can express themselves in different ways.
"Magic has no gender. That is the most important for me", he said, adding, "To see an energy reflected back at yourself at this young age—at any age—is impressionable and life changing. Our children need to know we're here and we got you."
